Do you upload my images to a server?

Accepted Answer

No — never. This is the core design principle of PixelTools. All image processing happens entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. When you drag a file onto any of our tools, it's read by the browser's FileReader API into memory, processed by Canvas, and exported as a Blob URL — all without any network request. You can verify this yourself in Chrome DevTools: open the Network tab, upload an image to any tool, and watch. You'll see requests for JavaScript and CSS files, but zero requests that upload image data.

Can PixelTools see my images at all?

Accepted Answer

No. We have no technical mechanism to access your images. Our servers only serve static files (HTML, JavaScript, CSS). The image processing code runs on your device. Even if we wanted to access your images, we couldn't — they're never transmitted to us. This is different from most online tools that say 'we don't store your files' as a policy — we can't access them as a matter of architecture.

Question 3

What happens to my files after I close the tab?

They're gone from all memory. When you close the browser tab, the JavaScript context is destroyed, the Canvas elements are cleared, and any Blob URLs are revoked. There's no residual data anywhere. On our side, there's nothing to clear because we never received the files in the first place.

Is it safe to process sensitive images — medical, legal, confidential?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Because your files never leave your device, PixelTools is safe for processing sensitive documents, medical images, confidential business photos, or any other file where privacy is critical. The files are processed entirely within your browser's sandboxed environment. We recommend always using a trusted, up-to-date browser for maximum security.

Do you use cookies or tracking?

We use minimal, privacy-respecting analytics to understand which tools are most used (so we can improve them), and Google AdSense for advertising. Yes, completely free with no file size limits, no daily limits, no account required, and no hidden fees. PixelTools is supported by non-intrusive advertising. Every tool, every time, is completely free. We will never put tools behind a paywall — it contradicts our founding mission.

What image formats do the tools support?

Input: Most tools accept JPEG/JPG, PNG, WEBP, and GIF. Some tools (like Image to Base64) also accept SVG and BMP. Output: Converters produce specific target formats (e.g., JPG to WEBP produces WEBP). Editing tools (cropper, rotator, brightness/contrast) output high-quality JPEG or PNG. The Image Compressor outputs JPEG. The Favicon Generator outputs ICO.

Is there a maximum file size?

No enforced limit. Very large files (50MB+) may take 1–3 seconds to process depending on your device's CPU speed. Files up to 20MB process instantly on modern devices. The limiting factor is your browser's available memory, not any limit we set.

Can I process multiple images at once?

Most tools currently process one image at a time for maximum simplicity. Batch processing is on our roadmap. For now, the tools are fast enough that processing 10–20 images individually takes only a few minutes.

Do the tools work offline?

Accepted Answer

Yes, after the first load. The JavaScript that powers all tools is loaded once and cached by your browser. After visiting PixelTools once, you can use most tools without an internet connection (the ads won't display, but the tools will work).

Can I use PixelTools on my phone?

Yes. All 18 tools are fully responsive and work on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. The interface adapts to smaller screens. For best experience, use Chrome on Android or Safari on iOS. Image processing speed depends on your device's CPU — modern smartphones process images as fast as desktop computers.

What's the best quality setting for compressing images for a website?

Accepted Answer

For most website images, 75–80% JPEG quality is the ideal setting. This achieves 50–70% file size reduction with no visible quality loss at normal viewing distances. Hero images: 80–85%. Product images: 75–80%. Blog thumbnails: 70–75%. Email images: 60–70%. Never go below 60% — compression artifacts become clearly visible. Never use 100% — it's 3–5x larger than 85% with zero visible improvement.

Why does compressing an image sometimes make it larger?

This happens when the image is already compressed or very simple. PNG files that are already highly optimized may not compress further with JPEG compression — and JPEG adds its own header data. For photos: practically yes, if you stay at 80%+ JPEG quality. The discarded data is imperceptible to human vision at normal viewing distances. For pixel-perfect quality: convert to PNG (lossless) using our JPG to PNG converter. Lossless compression achieves smaller reductions but guarantees zero quality loss.

How much can I reduce an image file size?

Typical results depend on the source image and target quality. From a raw camera photo at 100% quality: 3MB → 150KB at 75% (95% reduction). From an already-compressed image: limited further reduction. From a PNG photo → JPEG at 80%: 60–80% smaller. JPEG → WEBP: additional 25–35% smaller on top of JPEG compression. What's the difference between compressing and converting to WEBP?

Compressing adjusts the quality level within the same format — it works with JPEG's encoding algorithm. Converting to WEBP uses a completely different, more modern compression algorithm that achieves smaller files at the same quality level. For maximum optimization: compress first (set quality), then convert to WEBP. This typically achieves 80–90% total reduction from an original unoptimized photo.

When should I use PNG vs JPEG vs WEBP?

JPEG: For photographs, product images, and any complex photo for web use. WEBP: Same as JPEG but 25–35% smaller — use this as your default for all web images. PNG: For logos, icons, screenshots with text, or any image requiring transparent backgrounds. GIF: Only for simple animations (consider animated WEBP for better quality). Never use PNG for photographs — the files are 3–5x larger than JPEG with no visible quality improvement.

Does converting JPEG to WEBP reduce quality?

At 80%+ quality settings, no — the difference is invisible to the human eye. Converting JPEG to WEBP re-encodes the image using WEBP's algorithm, which is more efficient. At the same quality setting, WEBP produces a smaller file with the same visual result. Note: converting from an already-compressed JPEG to WEBP at 100% WEBP quality actually produces a larger file — set WEBP quality to 85% for optimal results.

Why does my transparent PNG have a white background after converting to JPEG?

JPEG doesn't support transparency — it's a fundamental limitation of the format. Transparent pixels are filled with white (the default background color) during conversion. If you need transparency, convert to WEBP (which supports alpha channels) instead of JPEG. If JPEG is required, you can control the background fill color in some converters.

Why can't I convert some WEBP files?

Animated WEBP files (WEBP with animation) may not convert correctly with all tools. Our WEBP to JPG converter handles standard WEBP files. For animated WEBP, only the first frame is typically extracted. If you encounter issues, check if the file is animated WEBP — you'll need a specialized converter for animated formats.

What is EXIF data and why should I remove it?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata automatically embedded in images by cameras and smartphones. It can include: GPS coordinates (your exact location), device make and model, date and time, camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), software used, and more. You should remove EXIF before sharing photos publicly because GPS data reveals your location, device info can identify you, and the data adds unnecessary file size (100–500KB in some cases).

Does compressing an image remove EXIF data?

With PixelTools, yes — as a side effect of how Canvas processing works. When we process an image through the Canvas API and export via toBlob(), the Canvas element only stores pixel data, not file metadata. This means EXIF is automatically stripped during any Canvas-based processing (compression, resizing, format conversion). If you specifically need to remove metadata without changing quality, use our dedicated EXIF Remover.

Images affect Google rankings through Core Web Vitals — specifically LCP (Largest Contentful Paint), which measures how quickly the main content (usually a hero image) loads. These are targets, not hard rules — a complex photograph may need 200KB to look good, and that's fine if it's properly sized for its container.

What is the difference between image file size and image dimensions?

File size is how many bytes the file contains (e.g., 2.4 MB). Dimensions are the pixel width and height (e.g., 3000 × 2000 pixels). They're related but not the same. A 3000×2000 image at 100% JPEG quality might be 12MB. The same image at 75% quality might be 800KB. The same image resized to 1200×800 at 75% quality might be 150KB. For web optimization, always address both: resize to display dimensions AND compress to reduce quality to the minimum acceptable level.
